How to Measure for Curtains

Step:1 Calculate the Width

Always use a metal tape measure as a cloth one can stretch and give an incorrect measure.

The first thing to do is to measure the full width of the track or pole. Do not measure the window.

Some curtain tracks will have an overlap arm, to allow the curtains to cross slightly in the middle. Add the width of the overlap arm to the overall width of the track.

If you have a curtain pole only measure the distance between the finials, do not include the finials.

Do not add anything else to the width measurement you have taken. The curtain supplier will add any fullness when calculating the fabric amount required.

Step:2 Calculate the Drop

The length of the curtains will depend on your preference. Typical length measurements are as follows.

    • Full length which is approximately 1-2cm above floor level

    • Above a radiator typically 1 to 3cm above the radiator

    • Below a window sill typically around 15cm

Curtain Pole

If you have a Curtain Pole, measure from the bottom of the curtain ring to the desired length.

For Eyelet Curtains take the measurement from the very top of the pole to the desired drop. The Curtain Supplier will add approximately 3cm of fabric above the eyelet to stand above the curtain pole. You don't need to add this to your drop measurement.

Curtain Track

If you have a Curtain Track, measure from the top of the track to the desired length.
